What is an Area Rep's role?  

Area Reps are key players in the SPEEA workplace network. They assist Council Representatives by helping with workplace communications, distributing information and collecting feedback from members.

ARs are essential to maintaining the best possible union representation for SPEEA members.

Because Council Reps are tasked with representing hundreds of members, it is vital for CRs to have the assistance of Area Reps to keep communication flowing in the district. ARs are critical members of the member-support team in each district.

Among the vital roles ARs fill are:

 
  • Assisting with communications within the district,including forwarding emails, distributing fliers and monitoring bulletin boards.
  • Assisting the CR with holding workplace meetings.
  • Welcoming new members to the district and encouraging their involvement in SPEEA.
  • Referring employees with contractual questions, concerns, or problems to the CR.
  • Becoming familiar with the contract and helping the CR to monitor compliance.
  • Assisting CR as necessary to support the district.
  • Learning about the SPEEA governing structure and history to help educate members.
