Wichita Technical and Professional Unit - Nov. 13, 2019
WTPU negotiations with Spirit continue

Teams for SPEEA WTPU and Spirit AeroSystems continued negotiations week. Discussions were sometimes spirited but overall collaborative.

Today (Wednesday), Spirit Senior Vice President of Global Manufacturing and Boeing Operations Vic McMullen gave a presentation describing the opportunities, uncertainties and challenges in the years ahead.

"I've been pleasantly surprised at the candor thus far," said Wes Gardner, WTPU negotiator.

While slow at times, our team continues to make progress toward a contract offer that we can lift from the bargaining table and present to members for a vote. We will continue to update the members.

SPEEA Negotiation Team member Abbee Bowman summed it up nicely: "Things are moving in the right direction but we're not done yet."

Continue to encourage co-workers to support our efforts and sign up as full, dues-paying SPEEA members. Every new member brings us closer to an acceptable contract. Display and voice your support in the workplace. Let management know we are an important part of Spirit and dedicated to its success while ensuring our participation in the same.

WTPU negotiations with Spirit start Wednesday

WICHITA – The SPEEA Wichita Technical and Professional Unit (WTPU) Negotiation Team begins Main Table talks for a new contract with Spirit AeroSystems Wednesday, Nov. 6.

The team has been meeting internally and holding lunch meeting with members since their election by the WTPU Bargaining Unit Council on Oct. 24.

At a workplace meeting Tuesday, a SPEEA activist stood up and issued a challenge to others to show support by signing up the not-yet-members in their areas. The team received a dozen new applications before they could exit the building. Additional new applications for membership continue to arrive at the SPEEA Midwest Office.

If early negotiations result in a tentative agreement, a member vote will be held. If approved and ratified by members, the new contract takes the place of the current contract. If no agreement is reached or is turned down by a vote of members, the existing contract remains in effect until it expires in January 2021.

WTPU Council approves early negotiations with Spirit

WICHITA – After debating the pros and cons of holding early contract negotiations with Spirit AeroSystems, the Wichita Technical and Professional Unit (WTPU) Bargaining Unit Council cast a unanimous vote to begin the process for full contract negotiations.

The decision to solicit applications for negotiation team members, select a team and negotiate a new contract came during a special meeting of the WTPU Bargaining Unit Council on Tuesday, Sept. 24. The anticipated timeline would have a new agreement in place by the end of the year, a full 12 months ahead of the current contract’s expiration of January 2021.

The compressed negotiation timeline will involve a significant time commitment. Team members receive training and work with staff to identify and prioritize contract changes and needed updates.

How to apply

Members interested in serving on the team need to attend one negotiations orientation session and apply by Friday, Oct 18.

WTPU Negotiation Team Application
